Joplin man found dead in Jasper County Jail

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a death at the county jail in Carthage.

On Thursday at 6:30 AM, Jasper County detention staff was notified of an inmate that was not conscious and not breathing in his cell.

Medical personnel were notified and lifesaving efforts were started but not successful.

The inmate was identified as 52-year-old Jason L. Romain.

Next of kin has been notified.

At this time, his death appears to be from natural causes. Authorities say no foul play is suspected, but an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Court documents show he was arrested on Saturday and charged with possession of a controlled substance.
