Woman killed when tree falls on moving ATV in Barry County

A freak accident Saturday afternoon a mile northwest of Shell Knob in Barry County took the life of an 80-year-old woman from Richmond, Texas.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says an ASIS 500  Side by Side ATV was being driven by 80-year-old Douglas W. Holley of Shell Knob on Stallion Bluff Road near that city when a tree fell on it while it was in motion.

Holley suffered moderate injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Mercy Cassville Hospital.

His passenger, 80-year-old Penny A. Horn of Richmond Texas was fatally injured.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Barry County Coroner.

Both Holley and Horn were wearing safety devices.

It was the 72nd fatal crash for Highway Patrol Troop D so far in 2024.
