Hot weather tips for older adults including cooling centers

The start of the summer heat season has arrived.

Older adults need to take special precautions to survive the high temperatures this summer.

Charlotte Foust with the Joplin Area Agency on Aging tells Newstalk KZRG:

“You want to make sure you are not dressing in heavy clothing.  You want to dress for the weather.  So shorts if you can do it along with short sleeved shirts, tank tops, something to make sure your body is able to release that heat and not hang onto it under your clothing.”

Remember to take advantage of cooling centers throughout the area as needed.

The cooling centers open up if the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for three consecutive days or if the NWS issues a heat warning at any time.

The cooling centers are located at Joplin City Hall – first floor, 602 S. Main; Joplin Health Dept., 321 E 4th St.; Dr. Donald Clark Public Safety Center, 303 E. 3rd St.; and Joplin Athletic Center, 3301 W. 1st St.
