Campaign collects over 380,000 signatures to place abortion access measure on November ballot

MISSOURINET – Could Missouri’s near total abortion ban be overturned in November?

That’s what one campaign is hoping to do after turning in 380-thousand signatures to the Secretary of State’s Office.

This follows a lengthy court battle with Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft over the wording used to summarize what the measure would do. Emily Wales with Planned Parenthood Great Plains says that anti-abortion politicians have been “blatant.”

“Their attempts to make the process harder to participate in direct democracy is about abortion access, “Wales said.

“It is about seeing in state after state after state the people want private medical care, they want to make their own decisions, including about abortion,” she added.

“They want to make it harder for the people of Missouri to actually participate in this process because they will restore abortion access.”

About 172 thousand of those signatures have to be verified in order for the proposal to be added to the November ballot.
