The remains of a fallen World War Two soldier from Liberal Missouri have been identified
The remains of U.S Army Corporal Julius Wolfe, of southwest Missouri’s Liberal, have been identified.
The announcement has been made by a U.S.Defense Department agency.
On June 6, 1944, Wolfe was killed, along with about 200 other service members enroute to Normandy, France.
As the ship they were on steamed toward the shore, it struck an underwater mine, causing the ship to burst into flames.
It was also hit by enemy fire, causing an explosion that ignited the ship’s fuel storage and instantly killed everyone in the troop compartment.
Wolfe was assigned to the Company B, 149th Engineer Combat Battalion in the European Theater.
He was 20 years old when he died.
