Protecting yourself and your home against crime

Tips from IDP Officer Hillary Cook

Crime prevention is something you can do.  Police officer Hillary Cook with the Independence, Kansas Police Department (IDP) says you can help protect yourself against crime.

“It’s no secret that a lot of people are worried about the rising threat of crime in their area,” Officer Cook says. “Luckily, there are ways to protect yourself and your home.”

Take a moment to examine your daily routine. If you frequently go for runs or walk your dogs, try switching up the times and paths you take. When running errands, or picking up your children, opt for different routes. Stay alert and ensure that you are not being followed. Avoid doing anything that might easily give away your whereabouts, like sharing your travel plans on social media. By simply making these changes, it will become more challenging for someone to track your movements.

Now, take a stroll around your house and check for any objects that could potentially be used to cause damage or harm such as ladders or shovels. Remove those objects to prevent broken windows or forced entry. Ensure all windows and doors are locked while at home, and away. Secure all other buildings and structures.

Leaving valuables in your car, and leaving it unlocked is an appealing target to burglars. Sometimes, they don’t even have to try hard – just a simple pull on the handle is enough to gain access. Always lower and lock your garage door when not actively using it to prevent burglars from getting to your property or even sneaking into your home without you knowing.

Don’t leave packages unattended. It is an instant attraction to thieves looking to score quickly and easily. Discard boxes of expensive purchases discreetly.

Do not share door codes or leave spare keys. Consider changing your codes often, or if you feel they have been compromised. Boost your safety with motion sensor lights, and a security system. Some can even be controlled remotely and can add another layer of security while you are away. Make sure you know your important numbers, like tag and serial numbers for valuable items.

Unexpected knocks at the door are not necessarily dangerous, but it is OK to exercise caution. If you ever feel unsafe, don’t open the door at all.

It is important to ensure the safety of yourself, and your family. If you find yourself in a dangerous situation, call 911.

Self-defense training can make you feel more secure at home and in your everyday life.

Remember to always have a plan for the worst-case scenario.
