Joplin City hall closed on Martin Luther King Jr. day
In observance of the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday, January 15, the Joplin City Council’s regularly scheduled third Monday meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 16. The rescheduled meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held in the Council Chambers on the 5th floor of City Hall, 602 South Main.
Also, in recognition of the holiday, City Hall and the MAPS system will be closed on the Martin Luther King holiday, January 15.
Residential trash and curbside recycling services will NOT change due to this closing, and Monday pick-ups will be completed on that day.
KGCS-TV, Missouri Southern State University’s television station, will broadcast the City Council meeting live on January 16, and will offer a re-broadcast at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17. Programming may be seen over the air on digital channel 21 and on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom, and Suddenlink.
As part of the Martin Luther King Jr. recognition, MSSU is hosting an event at 6 p.m. on Monday, January 15, in the Ron Richard Athletic Center (formerly the North End Zone Facility) on Southern’s campus. The theme for the event will be “Living the Dream: It Starts with Me — Spreading Hope, Courage, and Unity.” The event is free and open to the public.
Joplin Police Chief Dr. Richard Pearson is the keynote speaker for the event. The celebration begins with a social hour at 6 p.m., where light hors d’oeuvres will be served, followed by the program at 7 p.m. It will also include a performance by the marimba band Kufara.
