Lane closures to hit Neosho as city builds new roundabout

Newton County – Drivers should expect lane closures and traffic delays on Missouri Route 86 in Neosho when a project to build a roundabout and make intersection improvements at Hammer Road is scheduled to begin the week of January 15, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Contractor crews will convert the intersection just east of I-49 to a dual lane roundabout. In addition, the contractor will add street lighting, signs and permanent striping.

This project is a 50/50 cost share with the City of Neosho.

Traffic impacts:

  • Beginning the week of January 15, work will begin on the roundabout on Route 86 between I-49 and Missouri Route 175 (Gateway Drive)
  • Contractor crews will begin work on eastbound shoulder
  • Drivers should be aware of crews and equipment working close to traffic
  • Drivers can expect occasional lane restrictions
  • Beginning week of January 22, the Route 86 center turn lane and both westbound lanes will be CLOSED
  • Traffic will be shifted head-to-head in both eastbound Route 86 lanes
  • No access to Hammer Road north of the intersection
  • Drivers will have access to Hammer Road south of the intersection
  • Access to all businesses on Route 86 will be open during construction
  • No signed detour
  • Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zone
  • Drivers urged to find alternate routes to avoid work zone
  • Check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for road closings/traffic impacts

Weather and/or scheduling conflicts could alter the work schedule.

  • Prime contractor: Hartman Construction Inc., Springfield
  • Total construction costs: $1.9 million
  • Contract completion date: November 1, 2024
