Missouri House minority leader calls for an end to local taxes on food in Missouri
One Missouri Democratic gubernatorial candidate is calling on lawmakers to join with her in getting rid of state and local taxes on food.
House Minority Leader Crystal Quade of-Springfield, said the concept has bipartisan support in Missouri at a time when inflation has boosted grocery bills.
“Our families are struggling,” Quade said. “Everyone will benefit from this change. Everybody buys food.”
Under Quade’s plan, the state would repeal a 1.225% state tax on food, as well as local taxes charged for groceries, resulting in a $1.6 billion cut in tax revenue.
Some local officials in Missouri have opposed efforts to end the tax.
They say it could mean losses in revenue that would lead to layoffs of first responders including police and fire fighters.
