Open burning season in some parts of Missouri

The arrival of cooler weather coincides with SOME local governments in Missouri allowing open burning of leaves and other yard waste.

Jason Turner with the Jefferson City Fire Department says first, make sure it’s not windy and that there are no Red Flag warnings in effect:

“What we encourage people to do is burn in small piles – controllable – making sure you have some type of water source there (and) a rake to help extinguish that fire up quickly. And more importantly, do it at a good distance away from anybody’s property lines, any type of structures or buildings.”

Laws governing outdoor burning vary from town to town and county to county.

Also, check with your local government first to make sure it’s legal where you live – some municipalities don’t allow yard waste burning at all.
