Dog Day Afternoon reading event at Joplin Public Library

Dog Day Afternoon is coming to the Joplin Public Library, 1901 E. 20th in Joplin, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24th.

Dog Day Afternoon is designed to help newly independent readers become more comfortable reading.

Children will have the opportunity to read to one of the Library’s sweet therapy dogs and its owner in a quiet, non-threatening environment.

Each child will read for approximately 8 minutes, although the exact time depends on the number of therapy dogs and children in attendance.

During this program, children have the opportunity to read to the dogs on their own.

“We ask that parents/caregivers watch through our large window,” JPL officials say. “For this reason, we ask that children be independent readers who are comfortable with this set up.”

There is no cost to attend.

The suggested age for the children is K-5th grade.

Registration is suggested and will begin the morning of the event in person or by phone at (417-623-7953).

Spaces are limited.
