Police investigate attack after Lamar football game Friday night

One juvenile currently in custody

Lamar Police LogoAuthorities are investigating the  attack of a student following the Lamar High School football game Friday night.

The Lamar Police Department says one student from Lamar was assaulted and is reported to be in stable condition at a local medical facility.

Lamar police say the assault occurred directly south of the stadium near the intersection of 6th and Maple and was not related to the football game.

The suspects have been identified. Although they are juveniles, they are not students of either school involved in the game. There were no current football players involved in the assault.

At this time, there is one juvenile in custody being held at the Jasper County Juvenile Detention Center for 1st Degree Assault.

Lamar Police are currently seeking others involved in this incident for questioning.

Lamar High School released the following statement last night:

Dear Lamar Community, We regret to inform you of an incident that occurred outside Lamar High School stadium following tonight’s football game. When our football team was headed to the locker room, one of our students was attacked by an unknown individual. The student was transported to a medical facility.

School staff, along with law enforcement and emergency responders quickly intervened and provided immediate medical attention to the injured student.  We are fully committed to cooperating with them and providing any necessary support.

Although the incident occurred outside of school property, the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priority. Classes will continue as scheduled on Monday. We encourage parents to discuss any concerns or anxieties their child may have with our counseling team, who are available to provide additional support.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected student and their family at this difficult time. As more information becomes available, we will keep the community informed through official channels. Please be safe Tigers.
