Cost of Coldwater Creek cleanup is now more than $400 Million
The cost to clean up a very old mess in St. Louis is going up.
A new federal report finds that cleaning up Coldwater Creek and other radioactive waste sites in St. Louis County will cost more than twice what federal officials thought six years ago.
The projected cost to clean up the creek which has been contaminated by nuclear waste originating with the U.S. atomic bomb program of World War II went from $177 million to $406 million last year.
As the Missouri Independent reports, the reason is because of additional contamination that forced the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to expand their investigation and cleanup to include the creek’s 10-year floodplain.
