New Dred Scott cemetery memorial unveiled

A monument will soon be unveiled. 

One of Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis’ most well-known graves is about to get a more recognizable headstone, thanks to a GoFundMe account that has raised more than 25-thousand dollars. 

The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation launched a campaign in 2020 to build an educational memorial at his gravesite that features important historical information of the man who was the subject of the Supreme Court decision in March 1857 that denied his U.S. citizenship. 

The Scott v. Sandford case also helped spark the Civil War. 

The foundation will dedicate the new memorial monument on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023. Dred Scott died on Sept. 17, 1858.
