Accident on I-249 results in injuries to Carthage resident

An accident on I-249 three miles east of Joplin late Saturday morning resulted in serious injuries to a man from Carthage.

The MO State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when a vehicle driven by 52-year-old Axel Hartman of Carthage struck the rear of a Kenworth driven by 61-year-old William S. Massey of Oswego, Kansas.

Hartman’s car then traveled off the left side of the roadway across the northbound lanes of 249, across the northbound on ramp, through a ditch onto Newman Road and then hit a Jeep Wrangler driven by 43-year-old Abby L Phelps of Joplin. Hartman’s car then overturned.

Hartman was taken to Freeman West Hospital with serious injuries.

Massey and Phelps were not injured.
