Victim of Joplin fatal crash identified

UPDATE: The deceased driver has been identified as Christopher D. Colón, age 31, of Joplin. Next of kin has been notified. The female passenger in the crash has been identified as Crystal M. Kenney, age 27 of Everton, Missouri. The crash remains under investigation by the Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team. Further details may be released as information becomes available.

Joplin Police are investigating a fatal crash on South Jackson Avenue Wednesday evening. Read the full press release below:

On July 5th, 2023, at 6:35 p.m. the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a single vehicle crash in the 3900 block of south Jackson Avenue in Joplin.

Joplin Police responded to the scene along with personnel from the Joplin Fire Department, Redings Mill Fire Protection District, METS Ambulance and Newton County Ambulance Service.

The preliminary investigation of the crash found the vehicle was southbound entering the curves in the 3900 block of south Jackson Avenue. The vehicle left the roadway, collided with a utility pole support, rolled and came to rest in a ravine.

The adult male driver was ejected and died on scene from injuries sustained in the crash. An adult female passenger was transported from the scene with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Speed and alcohol appear to be a factor in this crash. The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Members of the Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team are actively working the crash investigation. Further details will be released once more information becomes available.
