Pittsburg Family YMCA pool announces phased re-opening

Last Tuesday, 19-year-old Caiden Barber of Pittsburg was found at the bottom of the pool at the Pittsburg Family YMCA.

He was later pronounced dead at Pittsburg’s Via Christi Hospital.

Now, the Pittsburg YMCA has announced a phased re-opening after the temporary closure.

In a Facebook post, those in charge at the Y said: ” . . . we want to emphasize that the pool will for the time being be limited to swimming classes and swim team only, in order to prioritize both safety and staff well-being.

“We understand that this may disappoint some of our valued community members who enjoy casual swimming or recreational use of the pool. We want to assure you that this decision was made after careful consideration and sensitivity to our staff’s comfort in response to the incident.

“We intend to continue to expand pool hours as staff availability increases. We ask for your patience and kindness for our staff in the coming days and weeks.”
