Columbia police officers under criminal investigation after viral video shows alleged use of excessive force
Multiple Columbia police officers are under criminal investigation after a viral video shows the alleged use of excessive force on a man.
A viral video captured by bystanders depicts multiple Columbia police officers responding to a disturbance outside of Harpo’s Bar and Grill in downtown Columbia just before 1 am on Sunday.
One officer is shown punching a man in the face repeatedly as he is being restrained on the ground.
Officers also utilized a taser and mace while attempting to cuff the subject.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and the Columbia Police Department is conducting an internal investigation.
A Columbia Police spokesperson could not comment on if the officers have been suspended, but the department plans to follow its policies for employee leave during investigations.
