Former St. Louis police officer aquitted on charge of raping fellow officer

ST. LOUIS (AP) –  A jury has found a former St. Louis police officer not guilty of raping a fellow officer more than a decade ago.

Jurors on Thursday acquitted 39-year-old Torey Phelps of forcible rape.

The woman accused Phelps of raping her while she was unconscious after a night at a strip club in 2010. Phelps’ attorneys said the sex was consensual.

They alleged the woman made up the story after she became embarrassed when rumors circulated around the department.

Phelps was charged in 2020 along with another officer, Lafeal Lawshea, who faces charges sexually assaulting two women more than a decade ago.

He is scheduled for trial in February.
