One Joplin Poverty Simulation planned for October 27
Event to include 80 people from 50 organizations
One Joplin, a community collaborative focused on facilitating communication and collaboration among area organizations, will host a Poverty Simulation from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the Joplin Family Worship Center.
The event will include 80 community members from 50 organizations will experience a simulated month of living in poverty. Registration for the simulation has now closed.
Scenarios are based on the experiences of community individuals and families.
The Poverty Simulation is designed to give participants insight into the challenges low-income families face daily as well as help to identify areas of change that could impact poverty’s impact on the Joplin region.
Participants will also learn about social capital and opportunities to make a long-term difference in the community.
“Participation in a poverty simulation is life-changing for many people ,” said Nicole Brown, Executive Director of One Joplin
“We all have our individual ideas and perspectives on what we think families in low-income situations are going through and what they could or should do differently to change the situation,” she added.
“This is an opportunity to walk in their shoes, make decisions, and experience the barriers they face on a daily basis,” she says.
