Sierra Club Calls On Evergy to Close KC Coal Power Plant by 2025
A coal-fired power plant in Kansas City is being singled out by environmentalists as a major polluter.
Evergy’s Hawthorn plant is located in Kansas City’s Indian Mound neighborhood on the city’s east side.
Billy Davies with the Missouri Sierra Club accuses the coal-fired plant of contributing to at least five deaths and more than 50 asthma attacks each year:
“Community leaders gather to call on energy to put its customers health and well-being first and commit to closing the Hawthorne coal plant by 2025 in line with the community’s needs to protect our families and future generation.”
A spokeswoman for Evergy says the Hawthorn plant cannot be shut down by 2025 without causing “significant reliability problems” for the Kansas City area.
External Communications Manager Gina Penzig also says the coal-fire plant is NOT a health threat, stating it contains state-of-the-art technology to reduce emissions.
