High-school tutors to attend training event at Missouri Southern
(Joplin, Mo.) – Area high-school tutors have been invited to participate in Tutor Day from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom at Missouri Southern State University.
The event will have student tutors from MSSU who are certified by the College Reading and Learning Association share their experience and training with their younger counterparts. Topics cover issues such as learning styles and personalities, time management and promoting self-learning.
The program, which began in 2012, is presented each fall by the Student Success Center. This year, around 50 high-school students from Webb City, Carthage and Lamar are expected to attend.
Other activities planned for the week of Sept. 26 include a film screening and lecture offered as part of the Czech Semester, and an opportunity for students to ride a zipline on the campus Oval.
Monday, Sept. 26
“Artist Behind the Iron Curtain”: Spiva Gallery. The exhibit features contemporary art from Czechoslovakia and tells the stories of the artists during a time in which their art could cause their imprisonment. It will run through Oct. 6. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
Tuesday, Sept. 27
Tutor Day: 8 a.m. to noon, BSC’s Connor Ballroom.
“Havel”: 7 p.m., Plaster Hall’s Cornell Auditorium. The 2020 historical drama follows the transformation of a carefree playwright and playboy to a banned and jailed human-rights activist and eventual president of Czechoslovakia.
Wednesday, Sept. 28
Zipline: 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the Oval. Students will be able to ride a zipline and enjoy snow cones.
Thursday, Sept. 29
“Mozart in Prague”: 1 p.m., Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. Dr. Diana Allan, professor of music at MSSU, will discuss how the famed composer (who lived most of his life in Vienna) saw an enthusiastic reception to his work in Prague.
Friday, Sept. 30
Women’s volleyball vs. Washburn: 6 p.m., Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
