Kansas City Council Votes to Adopt Climate Protection and Resiliency Plan

A program aimed at drastically cutting greenhouse emissions and combating climate change is going into effect in Kansas City.

The city council formally adopted the Climate Protection and Resiliency Plan Thursday.

The goal is to achieve a 100 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from electric consumption citywide by 2030 and become “climate neutral” by 2040.

Officials hope to rapidly decarbonize buildings in Kansas City and electrify city-owned buildings to improve the reliability of energy supply, improve air quality and help lower energy bills.

The plan also calls for retiring  Evergy’s Hawthorn coal plant by 2025.
