On August 10, 2022, Parsons Police Lieutenant Kyle Wiford completed a weeklong investigation into the non-compliance of a sex offender registration with the arrest of Calvin Willie Buford, 52 of Parsons.
On August 3, 2022, Lt. Wiford handled a call for service over a neighbor dispute. This incident led to the identification of Buford who was required to be a lifetime registered offender. Lt. Wiford inquired about his compliance with the country registrar and was notified that he had not registered with them. The investigation concluded that Buford had failed to register both his residence and his work with the county for over 100 consecutive days.
Buford is required to register as a sex offender for previous convictions for Sexual Battery by Adult/Victim under 12 and Lewd a Lascivious with a Child under 16. He has also had a criminal career spanning over 30 years.
Lt. Wiford located Buford and conducted a traffic stop on Birch Ave. on August 10, 2022, where he was arrested for Failure to Register as an Offender with 2 or more prior convictions. The traffic stop also resulted in the following charges:
- Driving while Suspended
- Transportation of an Open Container,
- Possession of Controlled Substance.
The request for formal charging has been sent to the Labette County Attorney’s Office.
Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks commended Lt. Wiford on a job well done. “It takes a lot of behind-the-scenes man hours to investigate this kind of crime. I am appreciative that Lt. Wiford has a passion for keeping felons in compliance with the conditions of their release. These charges can carry a hefty punishment, so it is up to the judicial branch to see that he answers for his non-compliance. The citizens of Parson have a right to know what offenders are living in their city and Mr. Buford is not an exception,” finished Spinks.
This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to “See It, Hear It, Report It.” If anyone has any further information on this incident or any other criminal activity, please contact the Parsons Police Department at 421-7060 or call the Tip Line at 421-7057 or email at
