St. Louis Cardinals Trade Targets
The St. Louis Cardinals sit 2.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central division. The MLB trade deadline is approaching fast and the Cardinals need to make some moves, if they plan on winning the division. Here are some moves I think could lead them to the division title:
Luis Castillo:
The Cardinals weak point this year is starting pitching and it’s not really even close. With Steven Matz out temporarily and Flaherty out for the foreseeable future, the pitching rotation is limping to the finish line. Castillo is having a great year for the divisional rival Reds. He has a 2.77 ERA in 13 starts, with 82 strikeouts and only 27 walks. Castillo has only managed 3 wins so far this season. This means his record does not look great, but that is a result of the Reds offense more then Castillo. This trade makes sense other than the Reds being in the same division. If the teams can move past that, the Cardinals need to make that trade happen.
Frankie Montas:
Montas is another starting pitcher prospect the Cardinals could use to patch up the rotation. Montas has a 3.16 ERA through 99.2 innings pitched. He has amassed 105 strikeouts and only 25 walks. These numbers could be exactly what the Cardinals need to make the late season push and potentially a post-season run. Both of the potential pitching additions could immediately be plugged in and not leave the rotation for the rest of the season.
Juan Soto:
This one is strictly because he is one of the best players in the MLB. The Cardinals have been linked to these trade rumors, but haven’t been the favorites to land him. St. Louis has the resources and the funds to bring him in, but it may be too big an ask to give up some of the team’s best prospects. With that being said, Soto would immediately make the Cardinals favorites in the division. Betting odds for the Cardinals to win the World Series would skyrocket. The ultimate goal is to win the World Series, so it may be worth it to make the deal.
