Flag Day planned for Tuesday, June 14th
Flag retirement ceremony planned . . . .
Flag Day will be observed on Tuesday, June 14.
Prior to Flag Day the flags flown at homes or businesses should be inspected .If they are showing age and are tattered or faded, they may need to be retired.
A flag retirement ceremony is the best way to get rid of an old flag. According to Joplin American Legion Post 13 commander Bob Harrington, “Burning is the proper way to dispose of retired flags, but it doesn’t end there. Caring for the ashes and respectfully burying them is part of the process too.”
Joplin’s American Legion Post 13 will be conducting a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 5 p.m. on June 14. The event will take place on the grounds of Memorial Hall, at 8th & Joplin Streets in Joplin.
The community is invited to participate or to bring retired U.S. or State flags for disposal.
Harrington adds, “There will be a brief ceremony at the beginning, then we will care for all the flags we receive If individuals wish to retire their own family flag, Legion members will be on hand to assist.”
Flags can be dropped off in advance in containers located on the 1st Floor of the Joplin City Hall at 6th & Main between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday.
