National Trails Day hikes Saturday at Carver Monument

DIAMOND, Mo. – The George Washington Carver National Monument plans several hikes on Saturday in recognition of National Trails Day. The hikes are free and open to the public.

The events will begin at 8 a.m. when members of the Dogwood Trailblazers Walking Club and a park ranger will take part in a 3-mile hike through fields and woodlands. The hike, of moderate endurance, will last about 90 minutes.

A 1.5 mile option will also be available.

Along the way, a discussion will take place about the boyhood of George Washington Carver and the restoration and maintenance of tallgrass prairie.

Participants are advised to bring a water bottle, sunscreen and insect repelllent.
