BBB says take the time to make sure websites are legitimate

We hear about it all the time.

Online scammers are trying to steal our bank account numbers, to get us to pay for things we haven’t purchased and to not send us what we’ve payed for.

In view of all this, shouldn’t the Better Business Bureau just tell us to not shop online?

“The Better Business Bureau isn’t saying don’t shop online,” says  Stephanie Garland, Regional Director for the BBB.  “What the Better Business Bureau is saying is take the time to make sure that it’s legitimate,”

“Take the time to make sure the website’s legit. Make sure the address is there on the website so you can look it up on Google Maps  . . .  and make sure its not an empty field, a daycare, a church, a building, etcetera.”

Garland says if “https” is in the web address that’s a sign it’s probably legitimate.

If not, watch out.

She says Internet purchase ripoffs are the number one most-reported scam nationwide.
