Council candidate Evans to request vote recount
Lost by 13 votes total in Jasper, Newton counties
Brian Evans, who lost a seat on the Joplin City Council by just 13 votes last week, says he will ask County Clerk Charlie Davis for a recount.
Evans made his announcement news conference this afternoon on the steps of the Joplin Police Department.
Evans failed in his bid to win a council seat by 12 votes in Jasper County and 1 vote in Newton County.
His loss allowed candidate Josh DeTar to win a seat on the body.
Evans said he had received more 200 requests to push for a recount.
Evans said he had been told several voters were given the wrong ballots. He also said, in other cases, he was told ballots had not been correctly entered into the vote counters at polling places.
The former candidate says he will ask the County Clerk for the recount in all likelihood tomorrow and is willing to pay the required fees or the entire cost for the recount, if necessary.
The results of the election will be formalized at tonight’s Joplin City Council meeting, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at 602 S. Main Street.
