BBB: Beware of the “gift card scam”

Advance America is a legal organization but  lately scammers saying they’re from that company have been calling consumers trying to rip them off.  It most recently happened in Neosho.

Stephanie Garland of the Better Business Bureau says the tip-off is they wanted people to send them pictures of gift cards. When a consumer protested, the caller became aggressive and threatened to penalize them by $600 for “being rude.”

“If  you are ever sending someone the picture of the back of a gift card, you’re going to get scammed,” Garland says.

Unfortunately scammers love to threaten us, to try to make us scared,” she adds. “They find that when people are afraid, they are more likely to send them money.”
