City Utilities smokestacks hit the dust in Springfield
Final moments captured on video
They are gone.
The iconic smokestacks at the James River Power station in Springfield, Mo., were imploded at their base and fell just after 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
The final moments of the stacks can be viewed on the City Utilities Facebook page.
Note: On the video, the stacks fall just past the 15 minute mark.
The smokestacks have served Springfield since 1957 but outlived their usefulness.
The demolition project at City Utilities in the city, expected to be completed by early April, removes only external components of the decommissioned station.
The building, substation, and several other components, remain in service to the community.
