Pitt State plans range of events to observe Black History Month.

The Office of Student Diversity and the Black Student Association at Pittsburg State University are planning a range of events in February as part of the national observance of Black History Month.  

Feb. 5 – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ball 

The community, along with the PSU student body are invited to attend the 6th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Ball from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of the Overman Student Center. Dress code is formal.   

The ball, which aims to foster diversity and engaging with one another, will include catering from Sodexo, a DJ and dance floor, speeches, and performances.  

The ball is sponsored by the Black Student Association, the Office of Student Diversity, and the Tilford Group.

RSVPs by Gorilla Engage are required.

Feb. 10 – Poetry Slam 

The public is welcome to attend the Black History Month Poetry Slam from 6 to 8 p.m. at Root Coffeehouse & Creperie, 402 N. Broadway. Participants will be treated to a coffee or hot chocolate courtesy of the Office of Student Diversity.  

The slam will be facilitated by leaders of the Black Student Association. 

Feb. 24 – Black Love – Make & Take or Take & Make Art Event 

The campus and community are invited to attend this event that starts at 5 p.m. in Room 201 of Porter Hall, home to the PSU Department of Art. Participants will explore poetry, short stories and have an open discussion about what black love is and what it looks like.  

While the readings and discussion are happening, participants are invited to paint what they feel and interpret what it means for them. The event will be livestreamed on the BSA Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PSU.Black.Student.Association 

Supplies may be picked up in the Office of Student Diversity in Horace Mann Room 104 on Feb. 23 or Feb. 24 between noon and 5 p.m. for those participating virtually. Those attending in person may use supplies provided at the event.
