Community receives update on Afghan resettlement in Joplin Metro
Public meeting planned for Sunday afternoon . . . .
There was an update at the Joplin Public Library on Friday from Refugee and Immigration Services and Education (RAISE) about the resettlement of Afghan refugees.
Mike Newman of RAISE says just over 1,400 refugees have settled in Missouri.
A total of 11 families have already come to Joplin, Carl Junction and Webb city with eight more families due to arrive by February 5. He says each family has between five and eight members.
Kara Gebre of RAISE says the refugees will receive financial support for only six months from the federal government. She says the money does not go directly to the refugees but to RAISE.
Newman says the refugees have been impressed with the low cost of living in Joplin and with the generosity of people in the area. Donations, sofas, washer-driers and cash are being accepted.
Those with questions are invited to email info@raise.community.org.
He said a meeting will be held this Sunday at 3 p.m. at Blendville Church at 2201 S. Picher in Joplin to talk about the resettlement effort and what you can do to help.
