Exercising caution, using good sense keys to safety with holiday lights

Some of us may be done with decorating our homes, some may just be starting.

If you’re putting lights on the tree or somewhere else in your house an ounce of prevention could prevent trouble this holiday season.

“Make sure your lights are in good working order,” says Carthage Fire Department Training Officer Brian Calhoun.

“Make sure there are not any nicks or anything like that with exposed wires,” Calhoun adds.

He says you should also use an approved extension cord and only place them in sensible locations.

Firefighters and safety experts say LED lights are 75 percent more efficient and work at a far cooler temperature than old-style incandescent bulbs
