Miami Fire Dept. partners with INTEGRIS to provide free mammograms
The Miami Fire Department is known for saving lives, but this time doing so comes in the form of fighting breast cancer with a donation to the INTEGRIS Health Foundation-Miami.
For 10 years Miami firefighters have been raising money for breast cancer awareness through t-shirt sales to help local women who can’t afford a life-saving mammogram. This year’s donation of $1,285 will help provide free mammograms through the Jo Ann VanSandt Memorial Mammogram Program at INTEGRIS Miami Hospital.
“We have been proud to support breast cancer awareness for the past 10 years, because we know that early detection offers the best protection against this disease,” said Miami Fire Department Deputy Chief Kyle Highsmith.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection offers the best chance for successful treatment, with regular mammograms considered to be one of the best screening tests. Though most insurance plans cover the cost of mammography, those with no insurance or with large deductibles may not be able to afford a mammogram.
“We are very thankful for the Miami Fire Department’s continued support,” said Jonas Rabel, chief hospital executive of INTEGRIS Miami and Grove Hospitals. “In the past 30 days, we have had six local women apply for a free mammogram screening, so the program helps fill an important need in our community.”
Individuals who have a financial need, reside in Ottawa, Craig or Delaware counties, and have no pre-existing breast health issues are encouraged to apply for mammogram assistance.
