Historic day for Quapaw Nation

Thursday, Quapaw Nation leaders commemorated the historic decision that affirmed what they say tribal leaders have always known….the Quapaw Nation Reservation has remained intact as Indian Country for nearly 200 years.

Since 1885, Native Americans charged with felonies on tribal reservations have been tried in federal court under the Major Crimes Act. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld this precedent in the McGirt decision in July of 2020.

Chairman of the Quapaw Nation, Joseph Tali Byrd says “It is a historic day for the Quapaw Nation.”

The Ki-ho-ta Center located just outside of Miami was built less than two years ago.
