Springfield protesters oppose end of additional unemployment benefits
In Springfield, TV Station KY-3 reports protesters held a rally Saturday in Springfield to oppose the end of Federal unemployment benefits that have added up to $300 a week to unemployment compensation checks.
Last month, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced the extra funds would end last Saturday — although the Federal funding doesn’t end until September.
Parson says the extra funds are keeping people out of the workforce.
Some protesters said they feel businesses are unwilling to pay people what amounts to a living wage.
Missouri is one of 25 states ending the increased payments this month.
