Blunt says the U.S. should push back against Russian hacking

U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, appeared on morning TV news programs on Sunday.

Blunt was asked about Russians hacking into the American electoral system and the oil and meat industries and what he thinks the nation should do about it.

“You really have to treat Russia like it’s virtually a criminal enterprise,” Blunt said.

“They harbor criminals, they don’t appreciate the rule of law, or any kind of level of personal freedom,” Blunt stated.

“I do think we have to push back,” he continued. “When there’s no penalty, there’s no sanctions, it’s hard to find who’s doing it, even when you can find where they are, we haven’t really effectively sanctioned the countries that are protecting this kind of activity. It has to stop.”

NBC’s Chuck Todd asked Blunt if companies should be required to guarantee their systems are secure in order to be vendors.

“The truth is we haven’t been able to guarantee our own system,” Blunt responded.  “You know, on the SolarWinds, they got in the government system as well. We didn’t know they were there, we don’t know how long they were there, we’re not absolutely sure they’re not there still.”

Blunt says the U.S. “has got to do a better job” with cyber-security to protect the vital interests of the American government and American citizens.
