Public meeting to focus on Memorial Hall’s National Historical Register nomination
An informational meeting is planned 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6 to learn more about the National Register of Historical Places and the nomination process for adding Joplin’s Memorial Hall to the Register. The meeting will be held in City Council Chambers located on the fifth floor of Joplin City Hall, 602 South Main Street.
Those present will hear about the findings and research of the Memorial Hall nomination including the presentation of the nomination and the report for the National Register nomination.
Matthew Pearce with Preservation and Design Studio, LLC of Oklahoma City, will provide the information, and a question and answer session will follow the presentation.
Memorial Hall, at 212 W. 8th St., was built in 1925 as a war veteran memorial to honor the men and women who gave their lives for our freedoms. It has served as the mainstay to welcome home our soldiers and today still provides a gathering place for veterans’ activities and meetings. Through the years, citizens have attended concerts, plays, sporting events and community programs in this facility.
The City recently completed a Memorial Hall Study that focuses on future use of this facility. The informational meeting on May 6 focuses on the historic preservation process and is separate from the Memorial Hall Study.
The public is encouraged to attend this meeting. Those with questions pertaining to topics of discussion at the meeting should contact Thomas Walters at 417- 624-0820, extension 539 or by email at TWalters@Joplinmo.org .
