Joplin residents have new location for bulky item dropoff

Starting April 1, Joplin residents will have a new location to take their bulky items due to a change in the bulky item drop off service contract.

Waste Corporation of America (WCA) submitted the low bid for this three-year contract that takes effect on April 1. Bulky items drop off is part of the City-Wide Clean-up Program designated in the Solid Waste Management Fund.

Residents will be allowed to drop off up to 2,000 pounds of bulky items, such as limited amounts of construction debris, furniture, brush, tree limbs and tires. Fees for the bulky items drop off service are divided in half between the resident and the City. Residents will pay $9 for up to 2,000 pounds brought in by car, pick-up truck or a trailer less than eight-foot in length. For loads brought on a trailer eight feet or longer, the fee will be $11. Tires are assessed at $2.50 each and no more than five tires can be brought in one load.

The transfer station does not accept liquids/chemicals, appliances, hazardous material, regular weekly trash, commercial waste, lead acid batteries, or leaves/grass clippings.

WCA’s hours for drop off are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday. The facility is located at 3700 W. 7th Street, on the south side of 7th Street, just west of Schifferdecker Avenue. For questions specific to the service, contact WCA at (417) 623-6620. For other questions about residential trash services, contact the Recycling Coordinator at (417) 624-0820, ext. 501.

Prior to this contract change, residents traveled to Republic Services near Galena for this service. Republic Services is the provider for the residential trash and curbside recycling services contract. Through this program, residents can put out bulky items with their trash for Republic to pick up on their normal service day. For questions about curbside bulky item pick-up, call Republic at (800) 431-1507.

The City also opens a free tree limb and brush drop off site on the third Saturday of each month through October. The drop-off site is located at 1702 North Schifferdecker Avenue, six tenths of a mile north of Belle Center Road on the west side of Schifferdecker.
