Joplin man dies after Motel 6 shooting

UPDATE: A man from Joplin has now died after he sustained gunshot wounds after a shooting at the Motel 6 Monday. Joplin Police say an autopsy has been scheduled for 43-year-old Matthew A. Painter. At this
time no arrest has been made, but the case remains under investigation. Further details will be
released once they become available.

Joplin Police continue to investigate a shooting. Read the full press release below:
On February 15th, 2021 at 12:24 pm, the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications
Center received a 911 call of shots fired at Motel 6 located at 3031 S. Rangeline Road.
Officers with JPD responded and located an adult male with multiple gunshot wounds. He was
transported to a local hospital and is currently undergoing treatment. He is considered to be in
critical condition and his name is being withheld pending the notification of next-of-kin.
Officers also located the adult male shooter on scene and he is currently cooperating with the
investigation. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Joplin PD Detectives are currently conducting the criminal investigation and further details will be released when they become available.
