Annie Baxter to be inducted into Hall of Famous Missourians
The first woman elected to public office in Missouri in 1890 will be inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians next week in Jefferson City.
House Speaker Elijah Haahr says Annie White Baxter, who grew up in Carthage, was the nation’s first female county clerk.
Speaker Haahr notes Missouri’s secretary of state certified the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote on August 26, 1920.
One hundred years later on August 26, Baxter will be inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians by the state Legislature.
