Joplin man arrested after accidentally shooting girlfriend with stolen gun

A man from Joplin is facing charges after he allegedly accidentally shot his girlfriend while cleaning his gun, which turned out to be stolen. Read the full press release below:

On August 2nd, 2020 at 11:15 pm, Joplin Police Officers responded to 913 S. McKinley Avenue for a report of gunshots. Upon arrival officers located an adult female that had a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was alert and responsive and was transported to a local hospital for further treatment and is currently in stable condition.

The initial investigation has determined this to be an accidental shooting. Information was received that the victim’s boyfriend, Travis K. Brown, age 48, of Joplin, was attempting to clean his handgun when the gun discharged and struck the victim. During the investigation, the firearm was determined to be stolen. Brown was placed under arrest for Stealing and for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

This is a continuing investigation and further details will be released when they become available.
