The Supreme Court clears the way for a second federal execution this week.
Time of death, 719 central time for convicted killer Wesley Ira Purkey.
68-year-old Purkey kidnapped 16-year-old Jennifer Long in Kansas City as she was walking home from East High School in 1998.
Purkey raped, tortured and killed Long before dismembering and burning her body, and dumping her ashes in a septic pond south of Wichita, Kansas, nearly 200 miles away from her home.
Before admitting to Long’s death, Purkey was convicted of killing 80-year-old Mary Ruth Bales in Kansas. Mary Bales suffered from polio and was killed with a claw hammer. Purkey was sentenced to life in prison for Bales’ death.
While in a Kansas prison, Purkey admitted to authorities that he had killed Long and transported her across the state line, which elevated the gruesome murder to a federal crime.
