Activist Group Calling For Masks For MO Prisoners
Is Missouri doing enough to protect our prisoners from the Coronavirus? According the KC Freedom Project’s Latahra Smith, the answer is absolutely not.
“According to the CDC guidelines, they’re supposed to have masks. We have not had any response whatsoever.”
The KC Freedom Project launched a petition calling on the State Department of Corrections to give masks to all prisoners and staff, as well as put sanitizer in each housing unit.
Jessica Upton, whose husband is behind bars, fears for her husband’s health.
“They’re scared. Inmates are human beings. If it was their loved one that was incarcerated, they would want the same thing as we do out here.”
The Department of Corrections Twitter page says prisoners are creating face masks for employees and inmates. Last week, a former St. Joseph prisoner in northwest Missouri died from the virus and one worker has tested positive after going on unrelated work leave.
