Serial drunken driver Meerwald headed back to prison

Judge Kevin Selby in McDonald County has sentenced 65-year old Edward Meerwald to to 4 years in jail for the second of two D.W.I. convictions. He’ll serve the terms concurrently

Meerwald was driving drunk when he hit 7 year old Jessica Mann and her grandfather, Jim Dodson on July 30, 2004. They were walking in the driveway to Dodson’s mailbox on Highway 86 near Neosho when Meerwald ran over them.

That case led to Jessica’s Law which stiffened penalties for repeat-offender drunken driving in Missouri

He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 14 years but served less. He received his driver’s license back in 2017 with the stipulation that he have an ignition interlock device installed. He is considered a serial offender.
