MO Lawmaker Files Bill To Ban Roadside Puns
One Missouri lawmaker wants to put the brakes on MoDOT’s use of putting up playful messages on those electronic road signs you see mounted along the interstate.
Such messages include, “Santa’s Coming Have you Been A Good Driver” and “Treat the Road Like a Cat Video… Share It.”
O’Fallon Republican Rep. Tony Lovasco says the signs are “hideously expensive ”. Lovasco wants to see those signs only used for traffic conditions, weather or emergency alerts, instead of silly sayings or puns. He’s filed a bill with the hopes of it being passed into law.
Jon Nelson, assistant to the State Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer, says they do display pertinent information whenever needed, but he pointed out that when the roads are clear, the department can “take the opportunity to let people know about simple things they can do to make Missouri a safer place to drive.”
