A Fayetteville police officer has been shot dead in the back parking lot of the police station.
Fayetteville Police Chief Mike Reynolds said the officer was executed outside of his patrol car while he was waiting for his partner, who was still inside the station at the time, so they could head out to cover their beat on Dickson Street. The shooting happened at 9:40 pm Saturday night.
Several officers ran outside when they heard shots fired. They chased the suspect down an alley while exchanging shots with the gunman, who is now dead.
When asked about the motive, Chief Reynolds said “I have no motive at all. It appears the suspect just came into my back parking lot and executed my officer.”
Their names are not being released at this time. The victim and suspect both died at the scene.
The FBI and Washington County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
