RapidSOS Clearinghouse helps ECC receive accurate device location data

The Joplin Emergency Communications Center is now receiving accurate device location data from 9-1-1 calls from iPhones with iOS 12+ and Android phones version 4.0+, as well as additional emergency data from apps such as Uber, wearables, connected homes and cars via the RapidSOS Clearinghouse.

The nation’s 50-year-old legacy 9-1-1 infrastructure was designed for landlines and provides very little data to first responders such as police, fire and EMS.

Through the RapidSOS Clearinghouse, we are able to access life-saving emergency data from supplemental sources at no cost – including accurate locations from iPhone with iOS 12+ and Android phones versions 4.0+. The Joplin ECC always seeks to implement 9-1-1 technology tools that will improve emergency response for our citizens and visitors.

The RapidSOS portal is a completely free solution available with no commitment to every authorized emergency communications center nationwide, providing invaluable information to dispatchers as they work to send callers the appropriate help quickly and accurately. In addition, the RapidSOS Portal can receive access to all data sources available through the RapidSOS Clearinghouse, including Apple, Google, MedicAlert, Uber and more.

This location information is only available when our center receives a 9-1-1 call within our jurisdictional boundaries, and only within a short time frame after disconnecting with the 9-1-1 call.  It is only used to help locate callers who dial 9-1-1 for assistance.

“The Joplin Emergency Communications Center is leading the way in 9-1-1 technology to improve emergency response,” says RapidSOS CEO Michael Martin. “We are thrilled to provide the Joplin ECC and their emergency responders with the information they need to get citizens help quickly in an emergency, saving lives and property.” Cheryl Konarski, Joplin’s Communications Manager stated

“This technology is at the forefront in helping us locate callers who either don’t know their location or for callers where we may need to verify that information. We have used this technology several times and are pleased with the accuracy it provides, helping us ascertain where the caller needs help and getting it to them.

Time is critical – seconds count and location is the key piece we need. The location of the emergency is the most important piece we need and RapidSOS helps us with that. This update in technology has been sorely needed and we are excited to have it here in our center.”
