Area ceremonies planned to observe 9/11

Wednesday is the 18th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.

Local observances are planned.

The Joplin VFW post will begin its observance with a 7:30 a.m. moment of silence Wednesday.

They will follow that up with moments of silence at 7:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center; again at 8:03 a.m., when the second tower was hit; at 8:37, when the plane crashed at the Pentagon; and at 9:03 when a plane crashed near Shanksville, Penn.

The VFW observance will take place at Post 534, located at 110 Veterans Way.

There will also be an 11 a.m. observance in Carterville’s Comets Park.

The sponsors for that observance include the Corporation for National and Community Service, Americorps Vista, Carterville First Baptist Church and the Carterville Community Initiative.
